Rahul is a 14 year old boy from Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He used to stay there with his family untill 2 years back; when he ran away from Bihar and landed up at the New Delhi Railway Station. His family comprises of his parents, 2 younger brothers and 1 younger sister. While in Bihar, he was attending school and was in the 5th grade until he decided to run away. One would wonder that why would a 14 year old child take such a drastic step, but, he says, that he got sick and tired of his Father’s brutal behaviour. His father, Surender, an alcoholic man, used to come home every day and beat his mother along with Rahul and his other siblings. Rahul could not bear the turmoil and hence, decided to run away. What is even more saddening is the fact that although he came out of that abusive atmosphere of his father, but, he ended up in a no lesser bad environment. Rahul is now a rag-picker and also sells Pan Masala, Gutkha and the likes in the local trains which are connected to Delhi NCR. He is able to earn somewhere near Rs. 200-300 from his 10-12 hours of work each day. He also does rag-picking.  In addition to that, he has been somewhat addicted to different kinds of Drugs consumption.

Rahul’s normal routine starts with him starting to work from 8 am in the morning along with his other companions. After fetching the selling material from the Stores, he reaches New Delhi Railway Station and starts selling the items in the trains, which are connected to the Delhi - Faridabad routes. He moves from train to train in order to sale his products.

While he is selling these items, he also is indulged in the task of rag-picking, which of-course continues till late in the night.

Since, he had been living in an environment prone to diseases with a much higher risk than normal, he had got some blisters on one of his legs, possibly due to the moist rainy season, which worsened as one day, while he was getting down the train, he got hurt on that same leg and his condition worsened, leaving him in deep pain. Some of his friends i.e. the other street kids helped him to reach the Don Bosco Health Centre. At the Centre he met Dr. Sachin and Nurse Sr. Mary and explained to them everything about his condition. Under Dr. Sachin’s guidance and expertise, Nurse Sr. Mary provided Rahul with the best possible first-aid and thereafter, guided him as how to take the medicines and take care of the wound. He definitely was instantly relieved and smiling with a sigh of relief.

He was all smiles about Don Bosco Health Centre. He thanked the Medical Team of Don Bosco at the Medical Centre and promised to motivate other children as well, to come forward and make the most of the available service.
